Over time, special education has acquired some curious misconceptions that can actually cause poor student outcomes and legal compliance issues. This session will dispel some of the most common sp ed myths and point out common pitfalls that can trap the unwary educator, including assistive tech consideration, who can and cannot qualify as emotionally disabled (ED), extended school year services determinations, overdoing work-arounds for students with reading disabilities, misleading manifestation determination questions, independent evaluation myths, behavior plans and their link to IEP goals, shortened school day lore, and others.
